My open letter on same-sex ‘marriage’
I am against the redefining of “marriage”. Passing such a bill (S1967) during the lame duck session will only result in more divisive conflict in New Jersey.
Marriage, as an institution, provides a ‘nest’ for the birth and nurturing of children. A place where the children generally receive greater emotional and financial security, therefore are given a better start on life. This is my view of the major advocacy of marriage.
Children of those in a same-sex relationship are either the victims of a former failed relationship or a result of an adoption. Passing same-sex marriage will not in and of itself repair any of the financial and emotional turmoil of children caught in the former unfortunate circumstance.
Those campaigning that same-sex relationships be defined as marriage, are supporting the financial and individual wants of a special interest group. This proposal is not an essential need for the survival of our state that is in the midst of a financial crisis. Progressive spending for nonessential reasons must stop if any financial recovery is to begin in our state.
This proposal has already cost us valuable time and money that should have been expended to solving issues that are bringing our state to its knees.
There will be costs to our state and local government entities, and our businesses as a result of the redefining of a same-sex relationship from “civil union” or “domestic partnership”, to marriage. This translates to taxpayer and consumer increases. We are breaking under the excessive accumulation of spending and it must cease.
I am someone who is graced by friendship of a number of individuals and partners who are involved in same-sex relationships. You can be assured that my view of the issue is not from any ‘phobia’ or lack of empathy for any inequalities that may be felt by same-sex couples.
The voters should decide an issue as pervasive as same-sex marriage. An issue that will embroil our schools, churches, our history, and our personal lives deserves no less.
Certainly, as proven in the recent oust of Governor Corzine, the majority of our state voters are not happy with the current tide of liberal government. Simply put, citizens are seeking a return to governance directed by us, ‘the people’.
I ask that voters decide the issue of same-sex marriage via a ballot question vote, not a vote of legislature.
Here is where you can look up and contact your New Jersey state representative to express your own views.
